Pockets, Pots, Place

I have been walking a local chalk river, The Stiffkey, from source to sea over a year, with hand sewn tie on pockets, collecting and foraging small amounts of what is bountiful and seasonal. Material explorations continue to develop with wild alluvial clays, reeds, rushes, natural fibres, gravels and flints. To build respectful and reciprocal relationships to a place over time, I am porous and playful, gradually accumulating an archive of experience. A pocket is a small intimate place, with a rich history and interesting semiotics. A pocket of time, a pocket of resistance, an air or water pocket. Our chalk rivers flow from underground water pockets, aquifers. As we stoop to gather or reach to harvest, or wade through, there is humility to these small repetitive actions. These are echoed in the making process and outcomes. Sometimes I’ll take my Kelly Kettle on a walk, to brew up, share some tea, pause and watch the flames, these are the things that remind us of our humanity.
